Every Premier League season crowns a champion club. But it also crowns an individual champion, the top scorer, whose prize is known as the Golden Boot. This guide explains how the award works, its history, and the strikers who have dominated it since 1992.
What is the Premier League Golden Boot?
The Golden Boot, formally the Premier League Golden Boot, goes to the player who scores the most league goals in a single season. Unlike some awards decided by a vote, the Premier League Golden Boot is purely a numbers game. Whoever scores the most goals wins, and if two or more players finish level, they share the award.
The idea of honouring a league’s top scorer is not unique to England. Spain has its Pichichi Trophy, which we cover in our guide to La Liga’s top scorers, and most major European leagues have their own version of the same idea.

Alan Shearer: the Premier League Golden Boot record holder
No player has scored more Premier League goals than Alan Shearer. He finished with 260 across his career at Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. Shearer won the Golden Boot three seasons running in the 1990s. His 34-goal season in 1994โ95 for Blackburn stood as the 38-game era record for years.
Shearer’s combination of power, positioning and finishing made him the most feared striker of the Premier League’s first decade. His scoring record remains one of the benchmarks by which strikers are still measured today.
The chase for Shearer’s record
For over a decade, pundits speculated about who might eventually catch Shearer’s 260-goal tally. Wayne Rooney and Sergio Agรผero both retired with over 180 Premier League goals, an enormous total but still short of Shearer’s mark. Harry Kane came closest among recent players before his move abroad, finishing with well over 200 Premier League goals across his Tottenham career.
Erling Haaland’s record season
When Erling Haaland joined Manchester City in 2022, he immediately reset expectations for what a single Golden Boot season could look like. In his debut campaign, 2022โ23, he scored 36 league goals, breaking the previous 38-game season record. Before Haaland, the highest total in a 38-game season belonged to Mohamed Salah, who scored 32 in 2017โ18.
Haaland’s rate of scoring, well over a goal per game across that record season, was remarkable. It drew comparisons to strikers from an earlier, more physical era of English football.
Golden Boot winners from outside the traditional striker mould
Not every Golden Boot winner has been a traditional number nine. Mohamed Salah, primarily a winger, has won the award multiple times for Liverpool. In those same seasons, he also ranked among the league’s top assist providers. Thierry Henry combined pace, movement and clinical finishing rather than pure physical presence. He won the Golden Boot four times for Arsenal in the 2000s.
How ties are broken in other competitions
Within the Premier League itself, the Golden Boot is shared if players finish level on goals, with no further tiebreaker applied. This differs from some other competitions, where assists or minutes played can separate players level on goals. The Premier League’s approach is simple: goals scored and nothing else. That simplicity is part of what makes the race easy for fans to follow all season.
Why the Premier League Golden Boot matters
The Golden Boot race gives every match extra interest, even in seasons when the title race has been decided early. Fans track it closely in the final weeks of the season. A striker chasing the award can turn an otherwise routine end-of-season fixture into essential viewing.
